Amazon Security Research Reportedly Behind Anthropic Fable Export Ban

According to the Wall Street Journal, the export control directive that led Anthropic to cut off access to its Fable 5 and Mythos 5 models was triggered in part by cybersecurity research from Amazon. The report says Amazon’s findings were discussed directly between CEO Andy Jassy and the White House ahead of the directive being issued. The specific technical claims made in Amazon’s paper have not been made public. This marks one of the first known cases of a rival company’s security research directly shaping US export policy toward a competing AI lab’s models.
